Worship: Read Ps. 61-62

Sing several choruses . . .

Word:
Abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul

Read 1 Pet 2:11
Why does Peter refer to believers as “aliens” and “strangers”? (cf., Php 3:20) Discuss the loyalties, affections, and investments of citizens vs aliens with application to believers in this world.

What does it mean to “abstain” from something? Is “abstinence” a matter of degrees? Why didn’t Peter say something like “reduce your involvement with” fleshly lusts?

What are fleshly lusts? Read Gal 5:19-21 Does “flesh” in the 1 Peter and Galatians contexts mean strictly “physical” desires -- or more broadly, all “unregenerate” desires? Why?

Read 1 Pet 4:1-3
What does this passage teach us about the “lusts of men”? Are these “strong” desires? Are these desires dangerous? And why?

Read Rom 13:13-14
What is Paul’s advice concerning these sorts of lusts? What are some lusts, or fleshly desires that can be guarded against by making no provision for them?
What steps have you (or someone you know) had to take to put Paul’s instructions into practice?

Read 1 Pet 2:11 again
How do lusts (and giving in to lusts) “wage war against the soul”? What are some symptoms of this “war” -- especially when the lusts are winning? How could you help someone in this situation?
